INTRODUCING 3rd BHUTAN INTERNATIONAL IT & TRAINING EVENT (BIITTE)
The Department of Information Technology & Telecom, under the Ministry of Information and Communication in partnership with Bhutan ICT and Training Association (BICTTA) is organizing 3rd Bhutan International IT & Training Event (BIITTE) on 21st & 22nd June 2018 in Thimphu.
The ASOCIO (Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organization) is recognised as the international partner for the event and ASOCIO Plenary meeting will be held in parallel to 3rd BIITTE (21st June).
The two day event will host panel discussion and seminars on various trending ICT topics concerning to national interest. Leading ICT leaders from 23 countries will be selected as the Speaker and Panellist during the event along with regulators and industry players from Bhutan. The Event is expected to have more than more than fifty international ICT industry players from 23 member country of ASOCIO and about hundred of national participants from Government, ICT professionals and ICT industry is expected to be part of the event.
Considering the Royal Government of Bhutan’s initiatives of transforming Bhutan to a Digital Society by introducing governance’s service to citizen and business on digital platform and its initiatives to promote Start-ups.
3rd BIITTE shall focus its talks and discussions on components, impacts and security aspect of E-Governances, E-Commerce and building Start-up eco-system in Bhutan. Through Panel discussions and Seminars.
Theme for 3rd BIITTE is identified as “Promoting Techno- Entrepreneur Ship for Digital Economy”
BHUTAN INTERNATIONAL IT & TRAINING EVENT (BIITTE)
BACKGROUND OF BIITTE:
The slow growth of ICT industry in Bhutan, despite of recognizing ICT as a priority sector for the development and with many ICT industry in the country, either switching to other business by recognising ICT as secondary business and secondly ICT personnel consisting the majority of unemployed pool was very concerning to an industry body like Bhutan ICT & Training Association (BICTTA) and concern agencies like Department of IT & Telecom (DITT) under the Ministry of Information and Communication, Royal Government of Bhutan.
After the joint studies & several discussions between BICTTA and DITT in the year 2013 & 2014, it was realized that majority of ICT industry lacked capacities and exposures on international markets and depended on limited business opportunities offered from the government as some of the reasons for slow growth and very importantly very few foreign direct investment in ICT sector was concern for the rising unemployment issues of ICT professionals at that time.
Therefore with kind support from Department of IT & Telecom, BICTTA in partnership with DITT decided to host international ICT event in Bhutan. The core objectives to host the event was to create platforms where leading ICT industry players can meet in Bhutan, whereby local industry can take the platform to gain international exposures and establish partnership with the international firms and secondly as a platform to promote international investments in ICT sector.
Accordingly it was decided to host the event in May 2014 and the event was branded as BHUTAN INTERNATIONAL IT & TRAINING EVENT (BIITTE).
The BIITTE talked on the role of leveraging ICT in economic development process, for citizen services, building start up culture and etc. In line with Gross National Happiness philosophy of Bhutan by the thought Leaders from Royal Government of Bhutan, ICT professionals, Spiritual leaders and leading ICT industry players from seven South East Asian countries through panel discussions and seminars hosted during the event. Side line to the Panel Discussions and Seminars Networking dinner were hosted for business partnerships and promotions.
Eventually at the end, BIITTE was marked as a successfully event, considering the outcomes delivered from it. Through the Event country to have FDI establishment (Bhutan South Tech ltd) in Thimphu Tech Park and by establishment of business links and partnership with seven South East Asian Countries for the Private ICT Industry of Bhutan.
Considering the success of the BIITTE, DITT and BICTTA jointly declared to host BIITTE as annual ICT Event in Bhutan. Where the Global thought leaders , Technology companies , Spiritual leaders , Global media and others can converge each year in Bhutan and collectively take stock of what all the key players of the ICT eco system are doing to propagate happiness of all living beings , how society is changing due to the information overload , how the young generation is adapting to technology , how digital divide is getting bridged and what are the challenges faced by government and industry in preventing the misuse of technology specially in the context of “Happiness” of global citizens.
Subsequently 2nd BIITTE was held in 2015, ICT leaders from 15 countries of Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) participated and benefits delivered to the ICT industry of Bhutan were beyond its expectations.
It was a huge honour and motivating for BICTTA and private ICT Industry to receive overwhelming support from Department of IT & Telecom and Ministry of Information & Communication. And agreeing to engage themselves as a co- partner to successfully host the Event. Department of IT and Telecom provide financial support for the execution of pre event activities and facilitated in obtaining relevant government clearance for the BIITTE since the inauguration of BIITTE in 2014.
Today BIITTE have become international recognised brand amongst the 23 member countries of ASOCIO.
